Table Rules

I have a few rules for my tables to help keep the game fun for everyone.

Loren the GM's rules for harmony

01. We are using D&D 5e rules with no variants (unless mutually agreed upon in Session 0 with DM approval). Specific rules beat general rules. We are using the most updated understanding of the rules as written. Any unclear rules will be left to DM fiat.

02. This is not a PVP game. Actions against other player characters that create intra-party conflict (basically, any action that removes player agency) are not allowed. This isn't to say that characters can't disagree, but rather that D&D is a team-based game and behavior that breaks that team spirit is generally disruptive to the game.

03. No evil aligned characters (this helps avoid the PVP significantly).

04. No bullying, sexism, racism, homophobia, or other intolerant behavior will be allowed. Behavior of this type has a zero-tolerance policy, and will result in (a) removal from the game and Discord server and (b) no refunds for outstanding payment balances.

Character Creation

While we'll want to tailor your character to the adventure you are playing, here are a few guidelines that can help you start planning your character.

General Character creation info

01. All characters start at level 1, unless directly specified differently by the adventure.

02. Ability scores are selected using 27 Point Buy or Standard Array of 15,14,13,12,10,8 (for details on these methods, refer to your PHB). Stat roll will not be allowed, to help keep characters balanced.

03. No evil characters - in my experience this generally leads to trouble within the group, unless everyone is on board and has discussed from the beginning. I encourage cooperation and a shared sense of adventure in my games.

04. While I highly recommend a backstory, I also suggest that it not be too involved or elaborate. Find one or two simple hooks that can define your character (I suggest at most a couple of paragraphs to tell your backstory). Since we are playing a pre-built module, backstory will usually be secondary to the goals of the pre-written campaign we are working through, and is largely for flavor and role play as a player rather than major story beats. If you have very strong ideas about particular events or specific characters in a backstory, please make sure you run them by me before committing to them, as I will need to make sure they can fit into the world.

Allowed Sources

There are lots of sources of material for 5e D&D, and some are better than others. Here are the sources that I allow at my tables.

Available books and sources

01. All classes, races, subclases, backgrounds, and spells from the following books are allowed:

  • Player's Handbook (PHB)
  • Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG)
  • Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (SCAG)
  • Volo's Guide to Monsters (VG1)
  • Xanathar's Guide to Everything (XGE)
  • Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (MToF)
  • Mythic Odysseys of Theros (MOoT)
  • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (TCoE)
  • Fizban's Treasury of Dragons (FToD)
  • The Tortle Package*
  • One Grung Above*
  • All officially published adventures*

02. The following books are limited to the subclasses, races, backgrounds and spells listed below:

  • Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica (GGTR): Centuar, Loxodon, Minotaur, Order Domain, Circle of Spores
  • Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron (WGtE): Warforged*
  • Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (EGtW): All races except Hollow One
  • Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft (VRGtR): All subclasses

03. The following sources have restricted use as defined below:

  • Acquisitions, Incorporated (AI) includes backgrounds, spells, and the Verdan race. Use of these items is only available after discussion and approval from the DM, as the tone of these items may not fit with all groups/campaigns.
  • Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (EGtW) includes subclasses, backgrounds, spells, and the Hollow One race. Use of these items is only available after discussion and approval from the DM, as the tone of these items may not fit with all groups/campaigns.
  • Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft (VRGtR) includes lineages, backgrounds, Dark Gifts, and other items that are themed around the horror settings of Ravenloft. Use of these items is only available after discussion and approval from the DM, as the tone of these items may not fit with all groups/campaigns.
  • Midgard Heroes Handbook (MHH) and Tales of the Old Margreve (ToOM) are from the Midgard setting published by Kobold Press. Options from these sources are only available after discussion about how to mesh them with the game setting and approval from the DM.
  • No monster templates (Lycanthrope, Vampire, etc.) from the Monster Manual (MM).
  • I will consider other sources (such as Unearthed Arcana or well-reviewed classes on the DM's Guild) on a case-by-case basis, but prefer to stick to the published books with groups that are just forming.
  • I may provide other sources that are not listed due to specific campaigns having unique options, or finding other resources that I want to make available.

Answers to some frequently asked questions.

A magnificent storyteller! Loren keeps the balance between a challenge and too easy perfectly. He blends fighting and RP with grace and allows us to explore things and keep true to our characters. He is prepared and ready for whatever random thing our group decides to do (you can talk to the townspeople about claiming that run down keep -- after all you did clean out the undead from it). His maps are great quality, his characters unique with different voices and personalities. He makes decisions that make sense for the story or the character, and is willing to listen and discuss reasons why a character may or may not be able to know or do something, and we can always TRY and see what happens. (Roll those dice!) Truly a wonderful experience you do NOT want to miss out!
